On This Easter… Jesus Was Not in the Tomb
The details of the Biblical tomb of Jesus ("Jesus' tomb") precisely match those mentioned in the Bible, as follows. The Bible says Jesus was buried in a tomb near Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified: "So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby" ().Jesus' tomb is located just 90 meters northwest of Golgotha. Apr 02, · The tomb Jesus was in was sealed with a large boulder. The boulder was moved to allow people who have blood in them to walk into the tomb. Jesus was transformed back into the body that Jesus had before he was born, even as were are born, when Jesus was resurrected. Jesus moved through the stone.
For some, Easter is just another Sunday in the year. There is no allegiance thee the Christian faith. The story ghey Jesus coming back to life, while powerful for some, means jesuw to this group of people. For seql, Easter is a time for their annual trip to church. Some new clothes are always nice. For me, Easter is something more…something much more. You see, Jesus was killed on the Friday before.
He died on the cross to pay the penalty of our sin; he became the substitute sacrifice and took on Himself the death we deserved. Easter is about the resurrection of Jesus. In other words, He was dead, and He came back to life. If that is true, then Easter is the most important event in all human history. Since Easter is about Jesus coming back to what does freehold mean when buying property, that would mean the tomb was empty.
That raises the question: where did the body of Jesus go? Right away we can look as those who opposed Jesus in that day and ask, Did Roman and Jewish leaders take it? It is sid they wanted Jesus dead. Taking the body would only have spurred on the movement they were working so hard to crush. Besides, if they had the body, they could have brought the growing Christian movement to a quick end.
All they would have had to do was drag out the dead body of Jesus and put it where everyone would see it. That would have flattened the young, fragile faith of the disciples and brought Christianity to a grinding halt.
This moves us to the second group of people who were involved. Did the followers of Jesus take the body? We read over and over how baffled they were when they saw Jesus after He had hw resurrected. In addition to the fact that they were not expecting Jesus to come back to life, the disciples could not have gotten by a group of Roman soldiers. These elite warriors pf killing machines. They were the Seal Team 6 of their day. That is not going to happen now.
And, it did tney happen then. There is one other reason the disciples did not steal the body. They would not have lived a life of depravation for what they knew was a lie. One of them would have eventually cracked and told the truth. There fid no conspiracy here. Listen, djd die for what they believe is true. We see this happen regularly around our world. But here is a key difference. While some people die for what they believe is true, no one dies for what they know is a lie.
If the disciples had stolen the body of Jesus, they would know everything they were teaching was a lie. The disciples would not have died for what they knew was a lie. There is a third group that was around in those toomb graverobbers. So we have to ask: did thieves take the body of Di Grave robbers are not a likely candiate for taking the body of Jesus. First, they would xid had to get tue the Roman guard. Again, a few graverobbers could not have defeated the Seal Team Six of that day.
Second, in John Grave robbers went in and got out as fast as possible. We know that grave robbers would NOT have taken the time to unwrap the body, let alone stop and fold the burial headcloth. The burial cloth in the tomb indicates the body was not taken by grave robbers. Ddid, we come to the last group. Did the women who followed Jesus go to the wrong tomb? It is interesting to note that not only did the women find the tomb empty, but Peter and John came and jesue it out.
And if somehow they all came down with amnesia, the Jews and Romans would have gone to the real tomb, dragged out the dead body of Jesus in order to prove tomn all that Jesus was still dead.
Friends, the only explanation that fits the facts is that the tomb was in fact empty that morning and Jesus is alive! This Sunday will be Easter Sunday. That will make it even more special. The ladies went to the tomb because Jesus should have been there. Since Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, every person who had died was there three day days later.
If you place a dead body — especially a body that had been beaten so brutally, then hung on the cross to eventually die of suffocation, and also one whose heart had been pierced with a sword — in the grave, all of human experience tells us that the dead body will remain there. However, not on this day. Because Jesus was resurrected. Mary and the other women approached the tomb. As they did, they saw the stone rolled away.
The soldiers were no longer there. The seal of the tomb broken. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. The angel explained the simple truth that bore out throughout the day, He is risen. Their eyes did not fool them; He was not there. Instead, Jesus beat death for us.
Since Jesus beat death for us, we face death without fear. Read the words of the Apostle Paul as he explains the significance of Jesus having victory over death:. O Hades, where is your victory? The disciples at this point had not placed it all together. Jesus told them all more than once that this was going to happen.
He gave them enough information to piece all this together. Luke explains what this sounded like at the tomb on that Resurrection Sunday as the angels spoke to the ladies:.
The angel reminded them — this is exactly what Jesus said to you when He was in Galilee. Jesus predicted this. As often happened until after the Resurrection, they misunderstood to what He was referring. Only after the Resurrection through the Holy Spirit did they put it all together. Jesus told them much earlier that He must suffer Luke As time continued to elapse, Jesus shared increasingly greater details Luke , 44; ; , 33; He pointed out the fact that the prophets had prophesied of this Luke , that He would be delivered over to the Gentiles Luke , and that He would rise again Luke They simply had not understood until this point Luke He is not here; for He is risen, as He said.
Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you. These words are no less true today for each of us.
Go quickly and tell others that Jesus is risen from the dead! Whereas in the earlier ministry of Jesus, He often would ask people to not tell anyone about Him since it was not yet time for others to know, that is not the case any longer. The story must be told. As Matthew wraps up his Gospel account, he quotes Jesus as saying,. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Matthew The eternal significance of the tomb already leaves us in a state of awe. However, it gets better. Hard to imagine I know, but God delivers through the resurrection of Christ in a way that overwhelms us. The power of the resurrection gives us the power to live as well — power to live eternally and power to live today. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.
Do you believe this? Jesus explains to Martha that the power of the resurrection provides those who believe in Jesus the power to live eternally. But the resurrection offers more. The Apostle Paul makes it clear that the resurrection power includes not just eternal power but power for daily living as well. He prayed that we would learn about it. Paul asked God to give all of us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, your eyes spiritually opened, that you may know:.
Eph Get this. The power that brought Jesus out of the grave works in you as well because it is the exact same power. Resurrection Power. Fellow follower of Jesus Christ, this. Power for eternity. Power for today. God provided the resurrection power to you for both.
On this Easter, Jesus was not in the tomb. Praise the Lord! Friends, as you meditate on these things, please do two things: first, lift your heart in praise to our most gracious Lord, and second, share and live in light of the power of the resurrection.
